RCMP Indigenous & Community Policing Unit
April Gavel is a police officer in the role of Community Policing Coordinator within the Indigenous and Community Policing Unit of RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador; she has been in this unit for just over a year and is in her 15th year with the RCMP. She currently has overarching responsibility for building and nurturing relationships with key strategic community partners of RCMP NL, such as Indigenous Groups and Indigenous community leaders, Violence Prevention Committees, Crime Prevention groups, the Law Enforcement Torch Run, the Children’s Wish Foundation, Seniors NL.
She also volunteers as a director with Thrive. She is a resource to all Detachments and employees on this and a spectrum of areas involving youth and the community. She actively participates, on her own initiative, in a multitude of community events, always promoting a positive public image of the RCMP. April represents the RCMP on various community based committees and initiatives.
While posted in Port Aux Basques, she sat on the Peaceful Communities group which is a local committee of Violence Prevention Southwest. While there, she was also elected to the Board of Directors for the Gateway Status of Women’s Council. April also serves as the Vice President on the Atlantic Women in Law Enforcement organization, where she promotes learning and development opportunities for females in policing. Additionally, April volunteers as an Aide de Camp to the current Lieutenant Governor Judy Foote.
